Summary

SQL, or structured query language is a set of commands ColdFusion uses to communicate with a database. The most common use of SQL is to search a database table for records that match a set of conditions. A ColdFusion template defines the terms of these searches in the <CFQUERY> section, then arranges the resulting output in the <CFOUTPUT> section.

SQL uses conditions such as WHERE X = Y in a template's <CFQUERY> section to tell ColdFusion which records to select. By refining this WHERE clause with relational operators such as greater than or less than, or with logical operators such as OR and AND, you can restrict queries to return a very specific subset of your tables.
