Day 17. Finding Text with Verity > Understanding Verity

Understanding Verity

In the lessons you've read so far, you've learned quite a bit about SQL statements and how they're used to sniff out chunks of data hiding in the nether regions of your database files. But in the real world of Web development, the average Web site hosts a lot more than just databases. Your average corporate site might contain static HTML documents and text files, or maybe even some word-processor documents or spreadsheets the company has made available for download. SQL will handle the database stuff, but what about the rest?

Verity's search tools provide a solution by allowing you to index and search a variety of file types, files that might be scattered all over your server or network or those of your client. Verity technology can dramatically increase the user-friendliness of your sites by providing a single, all-inclusive search page that will hunt down a phrase, whether it appears in a Word document on the marketing V.P.'s desktop or in a long-neglected spreadsheet on the accounting department's server.
