Chapter II-2. Initial Thoughts > Technology Decisions

Technology Decisions

First the team needed to propose to MonkeyTongue what technologies would be used to accomplish their requirements. Because the application needed to be web based, with a rich user interface, Vshift was primarily focusing on the following three choices for a development environment:

DHTML/Javascript—Had the project been attempted a year ago, this would have probably been the method of choice for a rich user interface. DHTML and Javascript could be used together to create an interface that interacts well with the user and functions similarly to a traditional windows application. To connect the system with a backend database, a number of technologies could be used, such as ColdFusion MX, ASP, Perl, and PHP. Vshift decided not to go with this selection primarily because even though the technique has come a long way since it was first introduced, targeting different browsers, systems, and devices still often requires completely different code. This is mainly due to the many different ways DHTML and Javascript are interpreted on these platforms.
