User Experience Narrative 2: A Return to Amazon.com

Many developers have told us that text-only variants of their sites wouldn’t be prone to the kinds of problems we saw on the site discussed above. These developers argue that their sites are database driven: pages are generated on the fly as the server executes scripts based on the user’s actions, and the kinds of mistakes we’ve been talking about just wouldn’t happen.

This is probably true in some cases. In theory, at least, it’s possible to write your scripts in such a way that the server can generate either media-rich or text-only pages on demand, with the content of the text-only version being identical (except for the images) to that of the media-rich pages. But this can be a double-edged sword, as the following example illustrates.
