Chapter 13. Server Side Includes > Configuring the Apache Server for SSI and XS...

13.1. Configuring the Apache Server for SSI and XSSI

In order to tell the Apache servers which files to parse, you must modify two server configuration files, srm.conf and access.conf, as follows:

  1. In the server configuration file srm.conf, specify the extension(s) of the files the server should parse and assign them to the "server-parsed" handler. For example, the following two lines specify that the server should handle documents with the .shtml suffix as HTML documents, and should assign the document to the "server-parsing" handler (mod_include), which handles all SSI:

    AddType text/html .shtml
    AddHandler server-parsed .shtml

Alternatively, specifying the suffix .html would make the server parse all HTML documents; however, keep in mind that parsing every HTML file could present a noticeable server drain.

  2. In the access configuration file access.conf, include the following directive, possibly for each directory (<Directory>) that contains documents with server-side includes:

    Options+ Includes
