Plug-Ins, Applets, and Controls

Although client-side scripting is a versatile way of extending Web pages beyond the capabilities of standard HTML/XHTML, browser plug-ins, Java applets, and ActiveX controls take client-side functionality a step further, enabling you to add multimedia and dynamic interaction features to your site.

Plug-ins

Plug-ins are small programs that extend the capabilities of the browser. Plug-ins work only on the platform for which they are designed. This means users must download a plug-in specific to their platforms (Windows, Mac, Unix, and others) to view the specialty content that the plug-in facilitates.
