Going Live

Using Frames to Manage Dynamic Content

Another time when frames come in handy involves certain types of dynamic sites. One such example is an HTML chat application, where one portion of the screen must continually refresh to re-query and show the latest chat messages. If you did this full screen, it would be impossible for the user to type their new message, because the screen might suddenly refresh while they’re in the middle of a sentence, wiping out whatever they had typed.

With a frames solution, the chat can refresh in one frame without disturbing other frames. This allows your user to spend as much time as he wants composing his message, then he can submit that form independently of the refreshing chat list.
