Characters That Change Unexpectedly

Some of my characters keep changing into strange URL encoded things, and vice versa. What’s up with that?

You need to pay special attention when typing your content directly in source code view. Some characters—such as < or " or & or many others—need to be URL encoded to properly display on a Web page. For example, if you want the < character to appear on your Web page, it must appear in the source code as <. If not, the browser may think that it’s supposed to be part of some special tag and incorrectly interpret it, possibly blowing your whole page to kingdom come.
