Chapter 21. Smart Objects > Inserting a Smart Object

Inserting a Smart Object

Now that you’re familiar with what Smart Objects have to offer, let’s see how they are implemented. The following demonstration illustrates how to use an existing file created by an image-editing program as a Smart Object; it does not teach you how to build the image itself. For more information about integrating with other programs, see Chapter 23, “GoLive Plug-Ins.”

Although not required, the best place to save the original image file is part of GoLive’s site. In fact, you will find that for every site declared, a folder called SmartObjects is created for this exact purpose. Each site contains a folder with all of the elements that are uploaded to the Web Server, a data directory, and a settings folder. The SmartObjects folder resides in the data directory, and is the ideal location to store all of the original image files for a particular site. This way, if the site is moved to another location on your hard drive, the relative path between the original image and the exported version remain constant.
