WebDAV Server

WebDAV is a fancy term for a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol that empower the server so that users can manage and edit files within a collaborative server environment, regardless of what application is being used.

Consider, for example, a site being developed in conjunction with a number of different companies. One company might simply hand-code, another might use Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage, and you are using Adobe GoLive. Traditionally, integrating these different methods of developing hindered the site management capabilities of a team: Features available in one program might not be available in another, and tracking which team member was working with a particular file often proved to be a project management challenge. WebDAV overcomes some of these challenges, allowing developers with different means of developing to work in a collaborative environment. In short, think of WebDav as an Adobe Web Workgroup Server on steroids, one that extends beyond the blinders of just working with Adobe’s programs.
