Building Mockups

The term mockup refers to any static image that can be used as a staging ground for a site’s design. Often designers create any number of mockups to present to the client for decision-making purposes. Without ever getting into the technicalities of coding, the possible designs can be evaluated, allowing decisions to be made before the expensive development process begins.

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and LiveMotion are all often used for creating mockups. But each program can do much more with that mockup than meets the eye. In addition to providing a staging ground for decisions, the mockup can be used as a backdrop for a page’s development as a tracing image. Furthermore, and perhaps even more handy, the mockup can be used to create the small individual images that will be incorporated into a page. In addition, each program can actually generate the HTML code that reassembles the individual images into a cohesive page.
