Chapter 29. Custom Merchant > Implementing Custom Merchant

Implementing Custom Merchant

The ideal guinea pig for our Custom Merchant site is to add online commerce to the record album search we built in Chapter 28. Let’s take it step by step.

Add the Custom Merchant Data Source

Before we can do anything like add buttons or functions or stuff, we need to have a Custom Merchant data source. As stated above, this is a data source that is maintained by a service provider, as opposed to a data source that comes from a local database you maintain. This means that your Web server will make calls across the Internet to read and write records to the service provider’s database. In test mode, which we’ll do here, this is not encrypted. But in practice, if you actually set up a live account with a service provider, it will be encrypted. This protects any credit card numbers entered onto your site as your server transmits them to the service provider for settlement.
