Background Images

Sometimes you’d rather use an image instead of a single color for your background. Since graphics smaller than the browser window automatically wrap and repeat, you can use relatively small images to create some impressive effects. Many backgrounds are available for use online, either for free or for sale, and the best ones create a pattern that repeats flawlessly, without a noticeable interruption at the edges of the graphic.

When creating your own background image, the most common formats are a 100×100 square (which will repeat across and down) or a wide horizontal strip (which will repeat vertically). When creating a strip, always remember to make it wider than you think you’ll need it, to avoid unusual wrapping patterns in larger browser windows. With the horizontal strip, you can create the illusion of multiple frames or page sections by creating color columns in your background. While it’s also possible to use a vertical strip in the same manner, it’s difficult to anticipate the length of a page, so these are rarely used.
