Going Live

Probably the biggest issue you’ll face when creating QuickTime movies for Web delivery is file size, and this is something that GoLive doesn’t really help you out with. The trick is to get the smallest possible file size that still looks and sounds acceptable. Often sites will provide two or three different versions from which viewers can choose based on their connection speed. So the big question really becomes “How do I do this?”

If you buy a Pro license for Apple’s QuickTime Player, you can use it to save condensed versions of your movies. Most editing programs, such as Apple’s iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere, offer such options. There are also dedicated applications such as Sorenson Squeeze, or the market leader, Discreet Cleaner. Use your editing program to save Digital Video or Full Quality QuickTime, and then use a product such as Cleaner to compress it with the best possible quality.
