Pizzazz on Your Pages

Animation and audio can really jazz up an otherwise boring page, but this can lead to a trap that many Web surfers have fallen into: unwanted music that suddenly blares from the computer’s speakers, long load times to bring up an intro movie that you’d rather just skip, and things floating across the page when all you want to do is read the content.

Properly used, these tools can add to the experience, rather than detract from it. Most types of animations and sound files are imported from other sources, and can be displayed on a Web page using just a link to download the external file, which is then handled by the user’s browser. But many of these files can also be displayed directly in the browser, and controlled by the Web developer. This section shows you how to take control over your user’s audiovisual experience. Putting these tools in the hands of the wrong developer can be compared to giving a hyperactive child a drum set for his birthday, so please use good sense in deploying these features.
