Chapter 25. XTRAS > WHAT ARE XTRAS?

WHAT ARE XTRAS?

Xtras serve three purposes. First, they give Macromedia a way to develop pieces of Director independently, without requiring it to make a whole new version of Director. Features such as Java export, animated cursors, image filters, and vector graphics are all made possible by Xtras, not anything inside the Director program itself.

Xtras are also used by Macromedia to add features that not all developers may need in their finished products. Network Lingo, for instance, is not needed in a projector that does not communicate with the Internet. Because network Lingo is enabled through Xtras, these Xtras can be left out when a projector is created and the resulting projector is smaller.
