USING PALETTE MEMBERS

Typically, a palette is a set of 256 colors. Palettes are used in situations in which the computer does not have enough power to display the thousands of colors visible to the eye. Instead, the computer is instructed to use 256 colors.

Palettes can also be applied to bitmaps to make them smaller. Rather than having each pixel of a bitmap represent one of thousands or millions of colors, it can represent just one of 256 colors from a palette. This means the image might not look as nice, but it takes up less file space.
