Chapter 12. LEARNING LINGO > FIRST STEPS WITH THE MESSAGE WINDOW

FIRST STEPS WITH THE MESSAGE WINDOW

Although Lingo scripts are usually stored in cast members, you can also run short, one-line programs in something called the Message window. Open the Message window by choosing Windows, Message, or by pressing +M on the Mac or Ctrl+M in Windows.

The Message window is plain, with just a large area to type and view text. When you type while the Message window is open, the characters appear there. It is doing more than just echoing text, however. The Message window is, in fact, a Lingo interpreter. It takes Lingo commands and evaluates them in the same way as the scripts you will soon learn how to write.
