USING SERVER-SIDE LINGO

The most powerful addition to Director 8.5, apart from 3D, is server-side scripting for the Multiuser Server. For the first time, the Lingo programming language has been extended to operate outside of Macromedia Director. The Multiuser Server, a completely different application, can now be programmed with Lingo.

Creating scripts for the server can range in difficulty from relatively easy, to very difficult. It all depends on how deep you want to go. For instance, the server can be programmed to use “threads.” Threads are like parent scripts or behaviors, except that they are running virtually at the same time as other scripts. Plus, “threads” are not, in themselves, scripts. They created, and then told what handlers to run. The handlers themselves come from outside the threads.
