Chapter 21. CONTROLLING THE DIRECTOR ENV... > TROUBLESHOOTING ENVIRONMENT LINGO

TROUBLESHOOTING ENVIRONMENT LINGO

  • Don't rely on the playback computer using the same time settings as your computer does. Months and days can easily be reversed in the date and different item delimiters can easily be set by users. Even if the target machines are in the same country, users sometimes play with the settings. Use the systemDate property when you can.

  • Developers waste a lot of time loading and unloading Lingo. Determine whether and precisely where you are having a speed problem before trying to solve it with one of the loading commands. Director is probably already performing optimally.

  • Make sure any custom cursor cast members conform to the required bit depths. Plain custom cursors need to be 1 bit and animated cursor members need to be 8 bits. They won't work otherwise.

  • Double-check the text in your menu description fields if you are having trouble. The installMenu command is literal and does not forgive many mistakes.

  • Don't forget that adding an Apple menu on the Mac means that a Windows projector will have a strange menu added as well. You might want to keep separate Mac and Windows menu description fields. In Windows, place any “About” menu item in the traditional “Help” menu, rather than in the Apple menu.
