DID YOU KNOW?

  • You can build the menu description field with Lingo. Just use string commands and other string Lingo to create or alter the field, and then use installMenu to make the changes take effect. This way, you can have a dynamically changing menu bar.

  • If you want a cursor of unusual size, you can simply use cursor number 200 to turn off the cursor, and then a sprite in the highest channel can be set to follow the mouse around. Users won't be able to tell that the sprite is not a cursor; it will behave just like one.

  • You can use the global version with Shockwave to redirect users who have various versions of Shockwave. For instance, you can make a Director 5 Shockwave movie that checks the version and uses gotoNetMovie to run a Director 5, Director 6, Director 7, or Director 8 movie.

  • Many more functions exist in the Buddy API Xtra that tell you about the user's system, and even control parts of it. See Chapter 25, “Xtras,” for details.
