DID YOU KNOW?

  • You can force Director to be your own RTF-to-HTML converter by importing RTF files and then getting the html property of that member. The same would work in reverse.

  • Use “put interface(xtra “FileIO”)” in the Message window to get a list of all the FileIO commands and functions. The same function works with most Xtras.

  • Rather than using put to place text before, after, or into a text member, you can use some undocumented Lingo: setContentsBefore, setContentsAfter, and setContents. For instance, you can write

    member("myText").setContentsBefore("abc")

to place “abc” before the text in the member, or

    member("myText").char[7].setContentsAfter("abc")

to place “abc” after character 7 of the member, or just plain member(“myText”). setContents(“abc”) to replace the contents of the member completely.

  • If you import a text file that was created in Windows, you might see extra block characters at the start of each line. These are newline characters. Director and most modern word processors do not use them. To get rid of them, write a repeat look that checks each character against “numToChar(10)” and deletes it if it matches. Or, you can use the offset function in a repeat look to quickly hunt down and remove them.
