Image Formats

Graphic file formats are of various types, such as GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PCX, and so on. Of these file formats, GIF, JPEG, and PNG are best suited for the Web. Whereas Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) and Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) are very popular formats and are supported by most of the Web browsers, the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) file format is relatively new. However, it is quickly gaining popularity, as will be discussed shortly.

Graphic Interchange Format

GIF is one of the two widely used graphic file formats on the Web. This is because browsers can easily download and decompress GIF images; GIF supports only 256 colors.
