How Forms Work

Forms are one of the basic ways in which a user can interact with a Web site. A form collects information from the user and submits this information to the server for processing. Forms can contain various objects that enable user interaction. These objects can be list boxes, text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, and so on. In addition, forms include form tags that contain the path to the application, which processes the user information.

When a user enters some information in the form fields and submits the information, the information is sent to the script or application on the Web server for processing. The Web server responds and sends the requested information to the user. Typically, the user information is passed to a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) application, JavaServer Page (JSP), Active Server Page (ASP), or ColdFusion (CF) page that processes the information and sends the response to the user.
