Chapter 13. Adding Multimedia Effects to... > Inserting ActiveX Controls and Java ...

Inserting ActiveX Controls and Java Applets

ActiveX controls provide support to an ActiveX-enabled Web browser such as Internet Explorer to play media files much the same way plug-ins provide support to Netscape Navigator. However, ActiveX controls can be used for purposes other than just providing plug-in support to a browser. They can be used to extend the functionality of a Web browser by using any programming language that supports the OLE standard.

If your Web site uses media objects, such as Shockwave files, that need to be viewed in Internet Explorer or any other ActiveX-enabled browser, you need to specify the ActiveX control that must be available on the browser. When you insert an ActiveX object into your document, you need to specify information that tells the browser which ActiveX control is needed to play this object.
