Getting Sign-Off

Review the completed Functional Spec with your team. Once both the designers and engineers (as well as any IT folks) are clear on it and all necessary revisions have been made, review it with the client. They will want to be walked through it, so a face-to-face is encouraged. The key here is to be very, very clear about the implications of changes made after they sign off on this document. Explanation and mutual understanding of the Functional Spec is critical to avoid the “that's not really what I meant” syndrome down the road. Plus, if the client is not completely sold and is adopting a “we'll see how it goes” attitude, you can be sure there will be costly changes. Cover yourself by getting a client signature and then distribute the Functional Spec to your engineering team so they can begin to build all the code.
