Chapter 07. Phase 5: Launch and Beyond > Scheduling Maintenance Training

Scheduling Maintenance Training

With most sites in maintenance, the unfortunate tendency is for the layout, graphic treatment, and information design to slowly break down and lose cohesion. With the original designers no longer choosing photos, laying out pages, and signing off on new content placement, the maintenance team begins to impart its own sense of design and organization, especially when incorporating new content. Although the maintenance team may have a background in design and layout, and even if its members are creative individuals with design ideas of their own, the integrity of the site depends on maintaining the look and feel that has been established. It is heartbreaking to watch the redesigned site slowly fall apart, often through no fault of the maintenance team. Usually, it is because they have not been adequately prepared for the task.

Because no one knows a site as well as those who built it, training and direction will almost always have to accompany the handoff materials. When planning maintenance training, set up a predetermined number of hours for the task; otherwise, it may turn into a never-ending process. Be timely with handoff materials; maintenance starts right away. Communicate clearly by explaining the Style Guide, the graphic and HTML standards, and the technical goals of the site. Consider it preventative medicine for your redesigned site.
