Developing a Maintenance Plan

In the first phase of web development (Phase 1: Define), we recommended that your client fill out the Maintenance Survey to help align and define postlaunch goals. You used the information gathered to help structure the redesigned site so that it could grow with the planned maintenance.

Revisit the Maintenance Survey. What were the goals? Daily news updates? Weekly HTML advertising emails? Press releases? Product additions? Housekeeping concerns like copyright updates, archival of articles, etc.? Now that production is complete, update the answers from the survey to include anything the client may have added during the course of development. Now is the time to plan for all these things. Be aware of what is required for maintenance and make sure the resources will cover it. A simple spreadsheet — with time on one axis (in hours/days/weeks/months) and the site sections to be updated on the other — clearly communicates what gets updated and when [7.6].
