Chapter 06. Phase 4: Build and Integrate > Creating and Populating Pages

Creating and Populating Pages

Your templates are done. Now it is time to use these files to create all the pages. As an external design studio, this may or may not be your responsibility. Oftentimes, you will hand off the HTML shells to the client, and they will create and link all the pages. If so, skip ahead to the section on QA and get ready to beta test. If not, it's up to you to punch out multiple pages based on your shells and build an alpha site, complete with working navigation and globals but with no page-specific content. Refer to your sitemap religiously when doing this; it will prove enormously helpful. When you are done you'll be ready to drop in content, suitable for client review.

Smaller Is Better

Yes, you are responsible for maintaining the K-size for the file. This includes more than just the K-size of the graphics involved; take note of HTML-page K-size (source code) and any outside programming. You have a target audience (and they might still be on modems), and now you have a “finished” piece. Too big? Go back and reoptimize. See if you can shave off a few bytes here and there. Make some decisions. Adjust.
