Defining Smart Design

Visual web design must be more than just a pretty interface; it must also follow overall site objectives while being functional. Here is where information design and advance planning take shape, find a face, and begin to communicate. The Design phase is often called “the fun part.” Here is where designers work their magic. Here is also where falling off track can hemorrhage your budget. Hold that tendency at bay. Practice Smart Design.

It is important when designing any site — new or redesigned — to understand the concept of Smart Design. Smart Design serves the audience's environment and capabilities. Smart Design combines style and function and keeps web standards including CSS in mind. Smart Design is focused on the audience's experience rather than the ambitions of the designer, the desire to use Flash (when maybe it isn't warranted), the positioning of the company's advertiser, or even the personal quirks of the CEO of the client's company. If it detracts from the usability of a site, it is not Smart Design — even if it is cool.
