Part III: Interactivity, DHTML, and Multimedia > Plug-Ins, ActiveX, and Java

Chapter 15. Plug-Ins, ActiveX, and Java

Extending the Browser with Plug-Ins and ActiveX

Extending the Browser with Java

Summary

Chapter 14, “Controlling Layers with JavaScript,” Showed how DHTML can be used to add complex interactivity and visual effects to web pages—subject only to the limitations of the browser itself. In this and the next chapter, you’ll see how you can add different kinds of media and interactivity by extending the browser’s capabilities. This chapter discusses how specific plug-ins, ActiveX controls, and Java can enable you to go beyond the browser, and how Dreamweaver MX 2004 helps you work with all of those so-called “rich media” technologies. Because of the extensive integration of Dreamweaver with Flash, Chapter 16, “Building Web Pages with Flash,” covers that topic.
