Chapter 1. Well-Oiled Machine: Working t... > Local Lefty, Remote Righty

Local Lefty, Remote Righty

The (expanded) Files panel lists your local site files on the right and remote files on the left. Many FTP clients are set up just the opposite, with your local files on the left and remote on the right. If you’re used to that setup, you could get confused and potentially overwrite files, resulting in loss of work. Don’t let this happen to you! If you’re accustomed to remote files being on the right side, set Dreamweaver up the same way.

To change the Files panel to display local files on the left, select Edit > Preferences (Dreamweaver > Preferences), and then click Site in the list of categories on the left side of the Preferences dialog. Now you should see at the top of the dialog the option that enables you to view local files on the right or left. Changing it to read Always Show Remote Files on the Left is the same as leaving it set to Always Show Local Files on the Right, so you should change only one list value and not the other. Otherwise, the Files panel will remain the same. Click OK to close the dialog.
