Chapter 3. Rapid Rows, Cruising Columns:... > Table Widths on a Need to Know Basis

Table Widths on a Need to Know Basis

The first time you insert a table, Dreamweaver displays a preset width value of 75%; you also can set the width in pixels if you prefer. What many people don’t grasp is that you don’t have to declare a table width at all, and in many cases it is better not to. Don’t misunderstand me; I’m not advocating that you eliminate the width value when you create your table—if you do that, you’ll get an impossibly skinny table that you’re going to have to expand to insert your content. No, the way to do it is to keep the table at whatever width you are comfortable with as you add your text, images, and what-have-you. When you’re done, select the Clear Column Widths button on the Table Property inspector (it’s the top left in the group of six buttons). Now the information is free to flow and the table cells will be only as wide as the content needs them to be.
