Accessible Stylish Headers

As mentioned in an the earlier tip (“Aye, Aye Caption!”), setting the Tables check box in the Accessibility category of Preferences brings up an additional dialog box when you are inserting a table. One of the options is to specify a header row, column, or both. Choose one of these selections and Dreamweaver converts the corresponding <td> tags to <th> tags. This action is taken to comply with §1194.22(g) of Section 508.

Browsers typically render <th> tags as bold and centered, which may or may not be the look you’re going for. Using CSS, you can style the <th> tags however you like and still stay within compliance. Screen readers react to the tag itself, not the way that it is rendered.
