Filtered or Non-Filtered?

You can create the illusion of some cool effects without altering an image in an editor such as Fireworks. Mind you, this isn’t for everyone—it is Internet Explorer proprietary. If that doesn’t matter, however, you can have a load of fun. Check out the Filter drop-down list in the Extensions category of the CSS Style Definition dialog. You’ll find an effect that turns a color image to black and white, an effect that makes an image look like an x-ray, and a whole lot more. You can use the filters on plain normal images, or for extra fun combine them with JavaScript. Here’s an example of a CSS that uses the Invert effect when you place your pointer over an image that is a hyperlink:

.scary a:hover img {
filter: Invert;
}
