Putting a Dent in the Code, or Taking Them Out

Neatly formatted code is far easier to read and troubleshoot than messy code. Part of what makes code neat is the care that developers take when indenting lines. If Commands > Apply Source Formatting doesn’t quite get it right, you do have the option to do additional formatting manually. I find these shortcuts most helpful when hand-coding JavaScript or server-side code. There is a better combo of keyboard shortcuts than the old Tab or Shift+Tab combo, which doesn’t require any selection at all to indent or outdent entire lines of code. Try using Ctrl+Shift+> (Command+Shift+>) to indent the line(s) or Ctrl+Shift+< to outdent the line(s). To help you remember which shortcut is which, the angle is pointing to the direction the code will be moved.
