Custom Empty Tags

It is no big secret that you can add custom tags to Dreamweaver using the Tag Library Editor (see “Create Your Own Code Hints” in Chapter 9). If you need to create an “empty tag”—that is, a tag that doesn’t have an end tag that requires closing, such as <br />—the Tag Library Editor does not give you an option to ensure the forward slash is used. It is a very little known secret that the underlying support for empty tags is already in place despite the lack of interface for it. Go ahead and take advantage of the Tag Library Editor to add all of your tags first. Then go and dig up the .vtm file for each new tag requiring modification in your user’s configuration. Let’s say you created a <love> tag. In love.vtm, you’ll find something like this:

<tag name="love" endtag="yes" tagtype="nonempty">
<tagformat nlbeforetag="0" nlaftertag="0" />
<attributes></attributes>
</tag>
