Chapter 10. Moving on Down the Road: Int... > Behind the Scenes of the History Pan...

Behind the Scenes of the History Panel

Many times when I’m working on an extension, I know there is an API call that does what I need, but I don’t remember off the top of my head what it is. Digging through the extensibility documentation is one way to find out, but I’ve found that if I go behind the scenes of the History panel, I often can find what I am looking for. Let me show you what I mean. Open any document and make a few changes to it in Design view so that there are several steps listed in the History panel. Now go ahead and Ctrl+Shift+Click (Command+Shift+Click) anywhere inside the History panel. Did you see that? Do it a few times, it’s fun. You’ll see the JavaScript that Dreamweaver used to execute each step. Right-click (Ctrl+Click) a step and select Copy Steps from the context menu. If you try to paste in any open file in Dreamweaver, it will likely just execute the step as though you’d pressed the Replay button. Instead, paste to a plaintext file outside of Dreamweaver to view the code. This is a really great way to learn about Dreamweaver Extension API and see how Dreamweaver does its thing.
