I’m Sorry, It’s Not My Default

The default extension for HTML documents in Dreamweaver MX 2004 is now .htm for both Windows and Macintosh. Although some may read this as another payment due He-Who-Lives-In-Seattle-And-Must-Not-Be-Named, others will just see it as something they have to change so that they can continue to work as they used to. The default extension is listed on the New Document category of Preferences. The relevant link to the document type XML file provides some information in Dreamweaver Help, but isn’t exactly crystal clear. (The previous sentence was lifted verbatim from the dictionary definition of “understatement.”) So, here’s the four-one-one: Open MMDocumentTypes.xml from the Dreamweaver MX 2004/Configuration/DocumentTypes folder; the XML file will open just fine in Dreamweaver itself. Look for the line that starts <documenttype id="HTML"..., and then locate the attribute for your OS (winfileextension or macfileextension). Make whatever file extension you want to be the default the first in the value list. If I want .html to be the default extension for Windows HTML docs, for example, the documenttype entry would read as follows:
