Chapter 10. Moving on Down the Road: Int... > Return of the Code Navigator

Return of the Code Navigator

If you’re a Tolkien fan, Return of the King is the crowning (no pun intended, really!) achievement. For hardcore coders, Return of the Code Navigator resonates just as deeply. The Code Navigator was a function found on the Document toolbar that listed all the functions in the current page; choose any function name to jump to its location in the code. Very powerful functionality with a fairly limited audience. In an effort to streamline the user interface, the Code Navigator was removed. Fret not, my guitar-loving friend (now that pun was intentional), you can restore this useful tool in a nonce.

To restore the Code Navigator, open the toolbars.xml file that lives in the Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration\Toolbars folder (that’s the system folder, not the user one) in your handy-dandy text editor. Search for the phrase DW_CodeNav (make sure you search in Source Code, not Text)—that’s the ID for the Code Navigator menu button. Notice that the <menubutton> entry has been commented out, thus removing it from view. To restore the functionality, either remove the comment code entirely—which also restores the Reference icon—or move the closing tag of the comment above the Code Navigator <menubutton> entry. Restart Dreamweaver and all hail the Code Navigator.
