Structuring History Panel-Created Commands

Don’t you just hate to do the same task over and over again? I do, and that’s why I’m a History panel fanatic. Not only does the History panel give a clear picture of almost every step you take in Dreamweaver, you also can easily transform those steps into a repeatable command. Years of building macros in Word taught me one basic rule to automating changes: End where you want to begin. Let’s say you have a standard list of names that you want to put in lastname-comma-firstname order. All you need do in Dreamweaver is perform the operation on the first name—using only your keyboard, as the History panel doesn’t record mouse clicks—and end by positioning the cursor so that it’s ready to do the second line. In this case, here’s what I would do:

1.
Place the cursor in front of the first name.

2.
Shift-select the first name.

3.
Cut it.

4.
Move to the end of the last name.

5.
Type in a comma and a space.

6.
Paste the first name.

7.
Move your cursor in front of the next first name.
