Getting Graphic

Dreamweaver has had a long and successful partnership with its sister program, Fireworks. With the latest version, that partnership has reached new heights, even though Fireworks is even more behind the scenes. Since early on, you could optimize a Dreamweaver image with Fireworks—rescaling, reducing the file size, even changing the file format—but it was always within an external process. Now you have the additional ability to crop, resample, alter the contrast, or sharpen your images, right within Dreamweaver. These new tools make short work of fine-tuning a graphic.

The keys to this new graphics power lie right on the Property inspector. Select any JPEG or GIF image and you’ll notice a new line-up of icons on the right side. But as another webhead said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Each of the tools alters the embedded image’s file. When you crop an image, for example, the dimensions are permanently modified—another reason to always have a backup of your site handy.
