Introduction > Okay, How Do I Get Started?

Okay, How Do I Get Started?

Take a handkerchief or scarf and fold it a couple of times so that it is about 3 inches wide and opaque. Wrap it around your eyes and tie it at the back of your head like a blindfold. Hold the book in one hand, and flip through the pages with the other hand. At a random moment, stab your finger someplace on one of the pages. Keep your finger where it is and remove the blindfold. (This may take some rubbing of your head up against a wall.) Read the tip your finger is pointing out. Presto—instant knowledge. Repeat about 300 times. Okay, you can just close your eyes instead of using the blindfold, but you’ll have much less to talk about if your mother should happen to walk in the room while you’re doing this.

The point is (no, not the finger again) that you can start anywhere and read the tips in any order. Although most of the chapters are based on a particular theme, such as CSS or extensibility, the tips themselves are self-contained and don’t follow any particular sequence. This means that if you’re doing a site using a lot of templates and library items, you might want to focus on Chapter 6, “Assembly-Line Acceleration: Rapid Template and Library Production.” Or, you can skim a number of chapters at a time in a personal test of high-geek knowledge. But don’t even think about curling up with this book on the sofa—there are way too many good ideas here for you to drift off to sleep.
