What’s Up, Doctype?

Dreamweaver MX 2004 is way better about validating webpages. But there are a bunch of standards out there—how does Dreamweaver know which standard to measure the file against? Just like a validation service, it looks first to see if the file has a declared DOCTYPE—and if so, it uses that DOCTYPE as the measuring stick. But what if there is no DOCTYPE declared? A whole lot of legacy Dreamweaver documents fall into that category because until recently, the default file was created without a DOCTYPE. In these circumstances, Dreamweaver uses whatever is declared in the Validator category of Edit > Preferences (Dreamweaver > Preferences).
