Chapter 8. All Fueled Up: The Best of Se... > Mapping Form Elements and Data Field...

Mapping Form Elements and Data Fields

Both the Insert Record and Update Record server behaviors are essential to about half of the web application work I do, which is devoted to administrative chores. Although their use is greatly appreciated, they can be a bit of a chore to set up, especially if you have a lot of fields. You’ll find that a great deal of time is spent mapping the form elements on the page to the fields in the data source. Careful planning can completely eliminate this time-intensive phase. If you name each form element with the same name as its corresponding database field, Dreamweaver will automatically map one to the other when applying either the Insert Record or Update Record server behavior. Moreover, you have a little flexibility because this feature is not case sensitive. The first time you see Dreamweaver complete this task in seconds, you’ll agree that it’s a beautiful thing.
