Project 7. Using Flash in Dreamweaver > Using Dreamweaver Flash Text

Using Dreamweaver Flash Text

Everything is now in place to add some Flash Objects to the main navigation bar. Because the design of this project’s web site is quite clean, you will use basic Flash Text objects instead of more eye-catching Flash Buttons.

1.
Click inside the first cell of the table and choose Insert > Media > Flash Text. The Insert Flash Text dialog appears.

2.
Choose your preferred font from the Font pop-up menu, and set the font size to 20.

Note

The font used for this project is Neuzeit Grotesk Black, created by Wilhelm C. Pischner and available for purchase at URW++ (www.urwpp.de), but you can use any sans serif font.

3.
Complete the remaining fields using the following values:

Color: #003366

Rollover Color: #336699

Text: Boring summer?

Bg Color: #FFFFFF

4.
Select the index.htm file as the Link using the Browse button near the Link field. You’ll need to go up one level when the Select File dialog appears. This redirects the user to the index.htm document each time they click on the newly created Flash Text.

Note

Notice that site root-relative links are not accepted by Flash Objects, because browsers are unable to recognize them within the SWF files. When creating links from Flash Objects, always use absolute or relative paths only. Besides this, when using document-relative links, a good practice is to save the Flash files into the same directory as the HTML document that encloses them. Do this to avoid problems with different browser interpretations of document-relative links. Because you are using document-relative links within the SWF files of a Library Item in this project, I suggest you convert those links into absolute ones before deploying the site to a production server.

5.
Enter boringsummer.swf as the name of the Flash movie in the Save As field, and click OK.

Note

In Design view, you can preview any media object you insert into your current document using one of two techniques. The first technique consists of selecting the media object placeholder and clicking on the Play button on the Property inspector. The second is choosing Plugins > Play (or Play All, depending on how many objects you wish to preview at the same time) from the View menu.

6.
Repeat steps 2 through 5 to insert two additional Flash Text objects into the two remaining table cells. Use the following sets of values:

Color: #003366

Rollover Color: #336699

Text: Wanna have fun?

Link: ../fun.htm

Bg Color: #FFFFFF

Save as: fun.swf

Color: #003366

Rollover Color: #336699

Text: Feeling brave?

Link: ../feelingbrave.htm

Bg Color: #FFFFFF

Save as: feelingbrave.swf

Note

At any time, you can modify any of the Flash Text objects you just inserted. Simply double-click their placeholder or select the object and click on the Property inspector’s Edit button. Either method will open the Insert Flash Text dialog for editing.

7.
Save and close flashnav.lbi.
