Creating ASP.NET Database Connections

Creating ASP.NET Database Connections

1.
With an ASP.NET document open, go to the Application panel and click on the Databases tab. Click the plus (+) sign, and select OLE DB Connection.

This adds a new Dreamweaver database connection. In this book, a Microsoft Access database is used because of its sheer ease of use. Keep in mind that although an Access database is good for a small-scale site, its effectiveness declines as traffic grows.

2.
In the OLE DB Connection dialog box, give the connection a name—in this case, advoodoo.

3.
Click the Build button to bring up the Data Link Properties dialog.

4.
In the Data Link Properties’ Provider tab, choose Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider and click Next.

5.
Browse to the location of your access database in the Connection tab. Test the connection to ensure everything is correct, and click OK to close out the Data Link Properties dialog.

6.
Click OK to close out the OLE DB Connection dialog.

Behind the scenes, Dreamweaver creates an entry in your web.config file, or if you don’t have a web.config file, Dreamweaver will create it with an appropriate entry for your database connection.
