Editing Optional Regions

In some cases, a template author might define optional regions within a template, allowing certain sections of the document to be made visible or hidden. Why? Sometimes a web page includes an element—a subheading or a Now On Sale banner—that is needed only occasionally. The elements in the optional region are made visible (or hidden) by the contributor on an as-needed basis. For example, when it's time to put a particular item in the website catalog on sale, the Now On Sale banner is made visible.

Optional regions are considered to be a template property and, as such, they are controlled by the Template Properties dialog box, which is accessible through the Format menu. A page that has one or more optional regions is noted by the note in the message bar informing you that the page contains areas controlled by template properties. You can select the link in the message as an alternative way to open the Template Properties dialog box.
