Introduction

When you publish an article in a magazine or a book, the material, after being edited and proofread, is eventually sent to the printer where it is put into a format that everyone can access. When you publish a page on the web, your file is sent to your web server, which, in most cases, makes the page immediately available to anyone who can visit your site. This procedure is sometimes referred to as pushing the page live and involves making sure that the web page and all the associated files—such as those for images, linked documents, and Macromedia Flash movies—are also copied into their proper folders. Macromedia Contribute does it all with the click of the Publish button.

Contribute also offers several other options in the publishing process. For example, although Contribute's built-in browser works well for most pages, certain designs—such as those involving frames—are best viewed using the browser on your computer that you normally use for visiting pages on the web. Contribute lets you preview your pages in your system browser before publishing them. Contribute also includes tools to help with your workflow, such as the optional e-mail review of a page prior to publishing. Perhaps of even greater help is the roll back feature; if your edits to a page are incorrect, you can revert, or roll back, to a previously published version. That particular lifesaver, as well as all the other publishing-related features in Contribute, are covered in depth in this chapter.
