Chapter 10. Managing and Styling Text > Using Special Characters

Using Special Characters

Web page text doesn't always consist of just alphabetical characters and numbers; sometimes, you'll need special characters such as copyright or euro symbols. Contribute makes the most commonly used special characters available for direct insertion and provides a tool that can insert any of almost 100 different symbols. Both options are found under the Insert > Special Characters menu.

The first special character listed, a non-breaking space, might seem like an odd choice to put up front, but it's important on the web. Browsers really only recognize a single space between words or page elements, and any additional spaces must be inserted using a non-breaking space symbol. By default, Contribute automatically replaces more than one space with a non-breaking space symbol; however, site administrators have the option of overriding this setting. If you need to add an additional space or two and cannot do so by pressing the spacebar, choose Insert > Special Characters > Non-Breaking Space. If you must enter multiple spaces, use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+Space.
